Haha I was just thinking about this today—well, sort of. At the panel at Sakuracon they said that they originally were going to have Mami be the red character and Kyoko the yellow, so I was trying to picture Mami in Kyoko colors, and no matter what I did she just had more of Kyoko’s traits as well because there are personality traits I associate with either color for a reason.
Huh, that’s really interesting!! I have a really hard time picturing the characters with a color swap too… xD;; I think one of the reasons I’m drawn to blonde/yellow characters is because they tend to fit within a certain archtype that appeals to me ~ to swap those archtypes, yeah, that just seems strange :o!
Some pics from the Madoka meet and greet in LA tonight <3! I wasn’t sure if I was gonna be able to make it or not, but at the last minute we decided to make the drive :D! I really enjoyed getting to see the english Madoka cast in person ~ and of course getting to meet other cosplayers as well! Thanks to Kate and Diana for letting me borrow Charlotte for some pics, too! >w<
I like how everyone of them has their own individual transformation sequence + their outfits aren’t just the same with a different color combination.

When you think about it, there’s a very solid reason why that’s the case, and not just because it looks nice.
In most Mahou Shoujo series, the magical girls are a unit, they’re working together as friends and comrades to achieve their goal. Their outfits and transformations reflect that by mimicking each others because they are together as magical girls. Their goal as magical girls is achievable because they are together, and more of them is better and makes them more capable of reaching their goal.
In Madoka, that is very much not the case. The goal of a magical girl in Madoka is not achievable by working together, and each girl is very much on her own. Even when working together, they are in it for themselves and themselves alone. Each magical girl in Madoka is a single unit, separated from every other magical girl. They are dressed differently and their transformations are separate to further emphasis they are all on their own.
